Der Arbeitsteil des Futterextruders besteht aus zwei Kammern:
In der ersten Beschickungskammer wird das Rohmaterial gemahlen und anschließend einer Hochdruck- und Wärmebehandlung bei einer Temperatur von 160 bis 180 Grad Celsius unterzogen. Der nächste Schritt besteht darin, das Rohmaterial durch die Löcher des Extruders zu leiten, wo die Kraft (d. h. ein plötzlicher Druckabfall) das Rohmaterial „explodieren“ lässt. Dadurch schäumt das Korn auf und vergrößert sein Volumen um ein Vielfaches.

Część robocza ekstrudera paszowego składa się z dwóch komór:

Kolejnym krokiem jest przejście surowca przez otwory wytłaczarki,gdzie na skutek działający sił (czyli gwałtownego spadku ciśnienia) dochodzi to „eksplozji” surowca. Efektem tego jest spienienie się ziarna, które zwiększa swoją objętość kilkukrotnie.
